The Open 2024 LIVE: Golf leaderboard and result as Xander Schauffele wins Claret Jug ahead of Justin Rose (1)

Xander Schauffele is The Open champion after carding a faultless final round to hold off the challenge of Justin Rose and win his second major championship of the year at Troon.

Schauffele, who won his first major title at the PGA Championship in May, shot a wonderful bogey-free round of 65, with six birdies, to take charge of a dramatic final round and lift the Claret Jug.

The American made crucial birdies at the 11th, 12th and 14th holes to move clear of a frustrated Rose, as well as Thriston Lawrence and overnight leader Billy Horschel, after the trio shared the lead heading into the back nine.

Schauffele’s victory means all four of this season’s majors have been won by Americans for the first time since 1982, with Scottie Scheffler winning the Masters and Bryson DeChambeau claiming the US Open.

Rose matched his best Open finish as the 43-year-old birdied the final hole to claim a share of second along with Horschel, while 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry finished sixth.

The decisive four-hole burst that led to Xander Schauffele’s stunning Open triumph

19:28 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Xander Schauffele won his second major in three months at the 152nd Open at Royal Troon to complete an American clean sweep of the game’s biggest titles in 2024.

Schauffele carded a flawless closing 65 to finish nine under par, two shots clear of overnight leader Billy Horschel and Justin Rose, who led early in the final round and had threatened to become the first English winner of the Claret Jug since 1992.

South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence, who held the lead after 11 holes on Sunday, finished a shot further back in fourth following a 68.

Schauffele, who registered a major record of 21 under par to win the US PGA at Valhalla in May, is the first player to win two majors in a year since Brooks Koepka in 2018.

Schauffele’s summer could get even better, too. He’ll head to Paris next week hoping to defend his Olympic title, that gold medal in Tokyo really serving to show that golf’s nearly man could perform on the biggest of stages. The challenge at Le Golf National will be different to the tests of Troon, but Schauffele will enter full of confidence.

Xander Schauffele reveals rewatching famous Troon duel helped inspire Open win

19:35 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Xander Schauffele has revealed that rewatching Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson’s memorable duel at the 2016 Open helped inspire him to triumph at Royal Troon.

Schauffele secured his second major of 2024, taming the Ayrshire links with an outstanding final-round 65 to seal a two-shot victory.

The American, for so long golf’s nearly man in the majors, had made his breakthrough at the PGA Championship in May, and carried the calm and composure shown at Valhalla to back up that victory.

The Open 2024 latest – SCHAUFFELE WINS THE CLARET JUG

19:03 , Chris Wilson

Schauffele spoke to Sky right after the being awarded the Claret Jug. He started by saying that he “can’t wait to drink out of it”.

“My dad’s here so I’ll let him do the honours of choosing,” he adds.

“It really is a dream come true to be holding it. It definitely hasn’t sunk in yet. I can’t wait to sit back and have a moment with this Claret Jug.

“I thought [winning the PGA] would help me and it actually did. I had this sense of calm, a calm I didn’t have when I played earlier at the PGA. For some reason, I was calm and collected. I was telling my caddie that I felt pretty calm coming down the stretch and he said he was about to puke on the 18th tee!

“I just told myself to just hit it down there and keep moving along!”

Schauffele is handed the Claret Jug by Royal Troon’s captain, and he has some words to say to the crowds.

He starts off by thanking everyone on his team, adding that he feels “very honoured”, and that winning The Open is “something I’ve dreamt of for a very long time”.

“You host a world class event, and all the players are honoured to partake in this great tournament.

“Last but not least, I’ve been in Scotland for two weeks now, [and] the fans have been amazing. You’ve made it feel like a second home for me and I can’t wait to come back”.

Last few shots of The Open 2024. Billy Horschel lands a brilliant putt to end the day, giving him three birdies in a row to finish. He finishes on -7, tied for second place with Rose, having shot 68 today.

Lawrence makes par to finish -6 with a round of 68 too.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

18:30 , Chris Wilson

Very unusual from Lawrence as his attempt to clip out of the bunker bounces off the inside and goes behind him, landing out of the sand. His next shot finds the green though.

The trophy engraving is done and Schauffele looks a very happy man in the back rooms.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

18:28 , Chris Wilson

The tee shot from Horschel lands centrally on the fairway, threaded between the numerous bunkers. Lawrence’s shot isn’t as good, finding the sand trap.

Henley comes close with the birdie putt on 18, but knocks in for par. He’s finished on -5, having shot 69 today. Not bad at all, but another who’s fallen victim to what the commentators called Schauffele’s “devastating display of golf”.

The final pair are making their way up the 18th fairway now.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

18:21 , Chris Wilson

It’s fallen apart a little for Lawrence, as a birdie attempt that would’ve made the last hole interesting is misjudged, and he guides it wide.

Horschel does better with his effort, securing back-to-back birdies to get to -6.

At 18, Henley clips his second shot onto the green, but it overruns the pin and it’ll be par at best for the American.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores – SCHAUFFELE FINISHES ON -9

18:20 , Chris Wilson

Schauffele misses the birdie shot but there’s still applause all round. Not celebrations yet, but there will be soon.

He knocks in for par to finish on nine-under, having shot 65 today!

Rose finishes with a brilliant birdie, curving it from right to left, and it’s a triumphant finish for the Englishman. He’ll wonder what could have been, but it was a ruthlessly professional display from Schauffele.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

18:16 , Chris Wilson

Rose clips his second shot of the 18th to within birdie distance, and Schauffele, not to be outshone, clips it almost exactly level.

The cameras flash to the Claret Jug being engraved, and the crowd greet Schauffele as a winner as he makes his way up the fairway.

At 17, Henley’s birdie attempt falls short in the battle for second place. He still hasn’t dropped a stroke today, but he’d need a minor miracle to win it from here.

Lawrence tees off at 17 and lands within birdie distance, but does it even matter?

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

18:12 , Chris Wilson

Henley has moved up to -5 as he works his way up the 17th.

On 16, Lawrence’s 30-foot birdie putt goes short, and it’s the story of the day for the South African. So close on several occasions. Horschel birdies for -5, but it doesn’t look like either are bothering Schauffele.

Schauffele and Rose are teeing off on the 18th now.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

18:09 , Chris Wilson

Scheffler is up to the 18th, and he takes the drop after a poor tee shot that he topped into the bushes in front of the tee box. His ‘third’ shot gets him within approach distance. His next shot makes the green, but he might end the tournament on level par at this rate.

He just about finishes in the red though, with his fifth shot is short and his putt for the double bogey landing. The world number one ends The Open on one-under, having shot 72 today.

Englishman Dan Brown has also come to the end of his Open run for 2024, ending the competition on level par. He kissed the par shot on the 18th and shot 74 today. His top 10 finish will give him a place in next year’s Open too!

Both Schauffele and Rose make the green on the par-three 17th. Rose is 31 feet away from the pin – his effort has the legs, but not the right line, and he’ll have to settle for par.

Schauffele is lining it up from slightly closer than Rose – it’s pin high but wide. He’ll make the walk to the final hole knowing that a par is likely enough to give him a win at Royal Troon.

Schauffele to try and navigate the bunker onto the green – it’s almost perfect, as it briefly looks like it’s going in, but it pulls wide and presents an easy birdie chance. He knocks it in to go to -9 with two holes left to play.

Not something Justin Rose wanted to see as he looks for the 51-foot eagle opportunity, but he goes short. He gets the birdie to come back at Schauffele, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be enough...

At 15, Lawrence is still in it but his birdie chance is from deep, and he misjudges it.

Lowry makes par on the 18th to complete a round of 68, and he ends the tournament on three-under.

Schauffele’s second shot of the par-five 16th lands around 10 yards short of the green, but he could engineer a birdie chance from there. There is a bunker in his way though!

Rose opts for the driver for his second shot, around 295 yards out, and it splits the pin and the bunker, teetering on the edge of the sand trap before falling kindly.

On 18, Lowry finds the green in two, but it’s a difficult birdie shot there. It proves too difficult, as his effort falls short.

One back, Scheffler’s birdie putt skims the hole and goes long, so it’s -3 for the world number one as he makes his way to the final hole.

17:40 , Chris Wilson

There’s one birdie for Lowry! He finally has his first of the back nine, draining from distance to take himself to -4. One more hole and you never know what a final birdie could do for you.

At 15, Rose needs to gain some ground on Schauffele. It’s not an easy putt for the birdie, and it doesn’t break to the left for him, so he’s forced to settle for par.

Will Schauffele extend his lead as he steps up for the birdie shot? Not this time. The leader is till at -8.

One back, Lawrence misjudges the putt and falls well short, converting for par.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

17:35 , Chris Wilson

Much kinder, calmer conditions have meant that the birdies have been coming thick and fast for portions of today, and somehow Schauffele is at eight-under. The commentators thought that a winner might be nearer level par at one point!

Great tee shots from Rose and Schauffele on 15, and both find the green in regulation, but very difficult to get birdies from where they’ve landed.

Horschel is in the rough but he punches it low to set himself up for the scramble. It’s agonisingly close to going in, too. Playing partner Henley is unable to convert the birdie shot, so he stays at -4.

Lowry’s latest birdie attempt skims the hole, and it’s not happening for the Irishman today. He has hope on -3, but you’d think he needs at least two birdies before heading in.

Dan Brown has fallen out of contention, currently sitting at -1 through 15.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

17:26 , Chris Wilson

Agonisingly close once more for Rose as another birdie attempt lands short. He stays on -5 through 15.

Schauffele has a good chance to give himself a two-shot cushion as he’s lying closer to the pin. It hugs the edge of the hole and falls in for -8!

Scheffler grabs another par at 15, but it looks like his race in run barring some serious turnarounds.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

17:23 , Chris Wilson

Scheffler has found himself in the bunker on 14 and he needs the up and down here. He clips out to within touching distance of the flag and then taps in for the sand save.

Lowry makes par on the 15th, and it looks like his hopes are fading, especially considering how Schauffele is getting on.

17:20 , Chris Wilson

Henley expertly guides the putt in to save par, so he stays within touching distance of the leaders at -4. Both himself and Horschel are still chasing but they’re finding birdies hard to come by.

At 13, Schauffele’s approach shot finds the green and comes to rest a few feet from the pin, slightly closer than Rose’s was. It’s an uphill lie but he measures it perfectly, draining it to move into the joint lead on -7. Rose can’t emulate that birdie though, settling for par instead. He remains two back on -5.

At 12, Lawrence leaves the rough but goes too far to the right of the green, and he can’t sink the putt for par. He moves to -6, out of the lead.

Lowry saves par on 14, but he really needs to start finding some birdies here.

Justin Rose lips out with his putt for par on 12, and he has his first bogey of the day. Could that cost him come this evening? He falls to -5, two shots off the lead.

Next on that same hole, Henley underplays the putt and may struggle to save par.

One back on 11, Lawrence taps in to save par and maintain his lead. His tee shot on 12 then finds the rough.

At 15, Lowry reaches the green in regulation but it looks too far for the birdie attempt.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

16:56 , Chris Wilson

Henley is plugging away on the 11th at the moment, but he won’t be finding the birdie there either as his approach lands too deep. His effort isn’t too far away, but it’s par nonetheless.

At 13, Lowry has a birdie attempt from distance, but once again he can’t quite manage to squeeze it in. He’s at three-under. Scottie Scheffler stays at -2 after making par.

Lawrence tees off on the blind tee at 11, and he finds the centre of the fairway. His approach is hit from 184 yards, and it creeps to the edge of the green.

Schauffele is the in-form man of the moment as he hooks himself out of the rough on 12 and makes the green with his second shot. Not sure there’ll be a birdie chance there.

Worse news for Rose, whose approach shot avoids the greenside bunker but rolls down the hill a little onto the first cut.

16:47 , Chris Wilson

it was harder than it looked like it might be, but Justin Rose sinks the putt to save par on the 11th. Schauffele does one better, moving to -6 and tied with his playing partner.

On 12, Scheffler is trying to claw back some ground but he’s not finding the birdie at the moment.

On 18, Rahm holes a deceptively difficult putt to end the tournament on -1. He shot 68 today, capping off a decent weekend.

The leading amateur – and soon to be Silver Medal winner – Calum Scott makes the walk onto the green at 18. His nearest challenger is three shots behind on +11, as it stands. He holes it for par and +8, having shot 76 today.

Rose tees off on 11 looking to avoid the tracks and bushes, and he does just that. Schauffele does the same, and both have avoided a potentially round-changing mistake.

On 10, Henley is the latest to fall short with the birdie putt. Lawrence’s approach shot gets to the green, but it’s not looking like a birdie chance from that deep.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

16:26 , Chris Wilson

The birdies are already starting to appear less frequently as the players make their way onto the back nine.

Lowry made par on 10, before his approach on 11 landed him with a difficult task to save par. He missed it, taking the bogey and moving to -3.

Both Schauffele and Rose settle for par on 10 too, but we do have a new leader! Lawrence chips his approach onto the green and kills it dead, landing a few feet from the pin and barely moving at all after. He’s at -7 now.

Elsewhere, Jon Rahm is coming to the end of his day after what was a promising start. He’s on the 16th at -1 as he hooks out of the bunker.

Horschel gave himself the perfect opportunity for the up and down out of the bunker on eight, but then he misses a simple putt for par! He falls back to -5.

Scheffler is a fair distance away with his latest birdie putt attempt, and he’ll go onto the 11th at -2.

Lowry avoids the tracks on the Railway and then finds the centre of the fairway with his second shot, but he’s failed to find the green in regulation.

Rose’s birdie attempt on nine is ambitious, and he falls short. He makes par though, and he’s shot 33 through the front nine. His playing partner, Xander Schauffele, can’t find the birdie either, so he stays on -5.

Burns sneaks up to -2, but there’s work to do to make some ground on the leaders.

Lawrence joins the leaders on -6 after holing a fairly straightforward putt on seven, and he’s got the Postage Stamp up next. So does Horschel, and he tees off straight into the greenside bunker.

Lowry’s blind tee shot at 10 takes him onto the fairway. Nice technique from the Irishman, cutting it left to right.

Rose has a birdie chance on the Postage Stamp but it’s from deep – and he holes it! What an effort, and he moves into the joint lead.

And an equally surprising event on nine Scheffler is putting from off the green for the birdie, but there’s too much on it. He misses the par putt, and it’s an easy knock to take the bogey, but he overcooks that too! He moves back to -2.

But the joint lead isn’t shared for long! Moments later, Horschel tucks in the birdie putt to go to six-under.

Scheffler escapes wonderfully from the bunker on the par-3 fifth, while on the par-5 fourth Rose has rolled a lovely approach to inside 10 feet.

SHANE LOWRY!

The Irishman rolls in a monster putt on the par-3 fifth, from 30 feet or more!

Lowry roars as he gets to -2!

Brown, though, drops to join him after getting into trouble in the bunker while Scheffler makes his par.

Oooh. Horschel has drilled his approach on the third into the greenside bunker. Up ahead, Brown has landed into big trouble on the par-5 fourth, and his first attempt to get out of the steep bunker fails to clear the lip.

Scheffler ended up in the same bunker as Brown, but makes it out and onto the green in three. Burns drops a shot at the third, so joins the group on -2.

Rose misses the chance to join Horschel on -5, as his birdie putt never quite had the line.

Horschel ended up having a clear sight of the green and has landed his approach safely on the putting surface. The leader looks in a good position to make par.

Lowry moves back into the red after a sensational escape from the bunker on the par-5 fourth. He knocks in his birdie.

Rose has now landed a lovely approach into the third green and will have a look at a second birdie in a row from inside eight feet, while Schauffele sees a birdie putt of his own break left and miss.

Horschel has landed into the crowd on the left, but gets a drop. He’s way, way out from the fairway.

Birdie for Billy Horschel!

Birdie for Justin Rose!

A brilliant start for the Englishman, as that approach into the second is rewarded. Rose rolls in his birdie putt, while Scheffler now jumps up to -3 with a birdie at the third. Plenty of early birdies for those at the front.

Schauffele almost chips in on the second, where Rose has given himself a great position to make birdie.

The leader is now underway, as Horschel makes a safe approach into the first green, but Lawrence lands in all sorts of bother in the fairway bunker.

14:27 , Chris Wilson

Both Rose and Schauffele make par on the first, while Scheffler finds the green from the rough to give himself a birdie chance on two. He doesn’t take it though, and stays on -2.

On the Postage Stamp, Rahm clips his tee shot with plenty of backspin and gets within a few feet of the pin – it’s a touch high though, and he knocks in for par.

Lowry has another birdie chance and it should be par for the Irishman, but he lips out! He’ll move to even.

Adam Scott has made a charge up the leaderboard too – he’s two shots off the lead after two birdies in three.

Brown birdies the second to make up for his earlier bogey. He’s back to -3. The last pair will be teeing off any moment now.

Rose takes the nine-iron to get him onto the green in regulation, but it rolls slightly down the hill. A small chance at a birdie, perhaps?

Schauffele’s second shot lands a few feet closer to the pin, creeping onto the green. A better birdie chance for the American, but he doesn’t take it.

On seven, Rahm has engineered another birdie attempt after landing his approach shot within a few feet of the pin, and he holes it to move to -2.

Burns and Henley, the penultimate pair, have just teed off.

Further down the course, it’s looking like Max Homa and Jason Day’s slim chances of contending are over, after three straight pars for Day and three bogeys in four for Homa.

Scheffler’s third shot on the first is more of a lay up than a putt attempt, and he’ll secure par.

On six, Rahm has worked himself another birdie attempt, but this one falls short. He’s at three pars and three birdies today (and -1).

More big names teeing off now, with Rose and Schauffele taking the stage. Slightly to the right and into the first cut for the Englishman, while the American’s shot is more central.

Mickelson and MacIntyre are coming to the end of their day, and the Scot finishes on +9 having shot three-over today. Mickelson pulled one shot back to end on +11.

Lowry has made par on the first, so he stays on -1. Dan Brown has teed off now, avoiding the deepest bit of the rough.

Thomas does end up with the triple bogey on the first, so he’s probably out of contention already with +3.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

13:53 , Chris Wilson

Shane Lowry is the latest to tee off, and he starts with a clean strike right down the middle of the fairway. He’s unlucky with the second shot, as it briefly looks like it’ll stay on the green before rolling back and into the sand trap.

Thomas’ second tee shot attempt earlier actually wasn’t very good – it landed right in the fairway bunker, so he’s looking at a triple bogey.

Rahm continues a solid day so far with another par, so he remains on one-under.

Some big names in the practice area now, with Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele not far off getting started for the day.

Justin Thomas, who starts the day on level par, begins by skewing his tee shot to the right and straight out of bounds. His second effort is better, but he’s potentially looking at a double bogey.

Rahm finds the green in regulation but it has a little bit too much on the spin, and it’s a difficult birdie shot. He makes a great effort, skimming the hole, but will have to take par.

Johnson has birdied the fifth to go to +1.

On 18, Spieth sinks a great birdie putt, curling round from right to left, to end the competition on +5, having shot 70 today.

On four, Rahm finds the edge of the rough on the fairway with his second shot, and he should have a birdie attempt.

Playing partners Day and Homa have both bogeyed the 10th, while Spieth makes the walk to 18 having just missed the birdie chance. He stays on +6.

Sung-jae Im, who had some brilliant form in the morning yesterday, has teed off too.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

13:17 , Chris Wilson

Rahm has sunk two three birdies to take himself to one-under. One to keep an eye on.

Jason Day has gone to -4 for the day and he joins Alex Noren on par – the Swede has two birdies through the first three holes.

Mickelson and MacIntyre are still plugging away on 15, with the former on +12 and the Scot on +7.

Spieth is up to +6 as he approaches the end of his day.

12:54 , Chris Wilson

Jason Day has three birdies over his last four holes, and he’s just +1 now.

Cantlay hasn’t been able to capitalise on his early birdie at the first – he’s missed three birdie shots in a row on the next three holes.

Dan Brown has arrived ahead of his tee time in around an hour – can he continue his historic weekend?

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

12:41 , Chris Wilson

Dustin Johnson and Colin Morikawa are the latest to tee off, starting the day two-over. They’ll be followed by Jon Rahm and Alex Noren.

Jason Day has his second birdie of the day, so he’s moved to +2.

MacIntyre and Mickelson, on +7 and +10 respectively, tee on the Railway 11th.

On 14, a nice tee shot gives Spieth the chance at a birdie, while Brian Harman has finished his front nine with three straight bogeys, taking him to +10.

12:21 , Chris Wilson

Great imagination from Mickelson to punch out of the rough on 11. He doesn’t make the green but he should make par anyway. Rob MacIntyre, his playing partner for the day, bogeys and goes to +7.

Calum Scott, the leading amateur, has teed off with Manassero. They’re starting the day on +3.

The Open 2024 latest final round scores

12:05 , Chris Wilson

Patrick Cantlay is looking to gain early ground and he does so straight away, birdieing the first to go to two-over.

On 10, Rob MacIntyre bogeys to move to +6.

11:57 , Chris Wilson

Harman’s tough start has continued, with bogeys on both five and six, and he falls to +6.

Spieth has followed that brilliant birdie with back-to-back bogeys on nine and 10, so he’s at +5 now.

It certainly doesn’t look like any of the early starters are going to be challenging come the end of the day, with Max Homa the closest so far on +3 and one-under through three.

Migliozzi is three-under for the day through the front nine, but he’s still only at +3.

Third time lucky for Si Woo Kim as he aces 17th hole at Royal Troon

11:40 , Chris Wilson

South Korea’s Si Woo Kim gained his revenge on Royal Troon’s 17th hole in the third round with the first ace in Open history on the par three and the longest in major history.

Kim’s two previous attempts playing the 238-yard penultimate hole had resulted in a double bogey and a bogey but he arrived on the tee having birdied the 16th, his first since the short Postage Stamp eighth, but at seven over for the tournament.

He landed his tee shot short of the green and as it rolled up it tracked all the way to hole.

“My caddie told me ‘You’d better hit hard with a three-iron’ so I did and as soon as I made good contact I see the ball over the fringe (thinking) ‘That must be maybe inside 20 feet’,” he said.

Max Homa teed off around 15 minutes ago and he ended up making par on the first, so he stays at +5.

Jordan Spieth has sunk a birdie from around 20 yards straight out of the rough, so he continues his good start and moves to +3 (and three-under for the day).

Brian Harman is one shot behind Spieth, having shot one-under through three, and Rob MacIntyre has gone one shot behind him (to +5) after draining his third birdie of the day on the seventh.

What happens if the scores are tied?

11:10 , Chris Wilson

At The Open, there’s a four-hole aggregate play-off involving the first, second, 17th and 18th. The player with the lowest score from those four holes wins the Claret Jug, though if there’s still a tie after that, then it goes to sudden death to produce a winner.

There hasn’t been a play-off at The Open since 2015 at St Andrews, but two of the last four held at Royal Troon have gone to extra holes .

The Open Championship prize money

10:58 , Lawrence Ostlere

The Open is the oldest golf competition in the world and the winner will collect the famous Claret Jug, first awarded in 1872. They will also receive a healthy winners’ cheque from the R&A worth $3.1m (£2.4m).

The R&A raised the total prize fund to $17m (£13.4m) in 2024, up $500,000 from last year but still the lowest of the four major championships.

Bryson DeChambeau took home $4.3m for winning the US Open, Scheffler earned $3.6m for winning the Masters, and Schauffele received $3.3m for winning the US PGA Championship.

Asked before this year’s Open whether he was concerned by The Open’s position as the least lucrative event of the big four, R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers replied: “A, I didn’t know, and B, I don’t care.

“While we will always offer a very competitive prize fund for the Open, our wider focus is on increasing participation and improving pathways in golf. We have to make choices about how we allocate resources and make the resources we have go as far as they can. Our responsibility is to ensure the game is thriving 50 years from now.”

Bob MacIntyre admits Troon has brought him back down to earth

10:42 , Lawrence Ostlere

MacIntyre said: “A lot of people have been struggling this week. After yesterday’s (first) four holes, I thought I’d be sitting on my couch in Oban right now, not playing golf. It was a big effort last night and, coming out today, I didn’t have everything going.

“But that’s golf. Last week you were the champion and this week you’re just bottom of the pack.”

Bob MacIntyre admits Troon has brought him back down to earth

10:33 , Lawrence Ostlere

Robert MacIntyre admitted Royal Troon had brought him back down to earth as he struggled to replicate last week’s heroics.

The Oban-based left-hander celebrated long into the night after triumphing in his home Scottish Open last Sunday but it has been a different story in Ayrshire this week.

After battling to make the Open cut on Friday, the 27-year-old again found the going tough in the third round, carding a one-over-par 72 to sit on six over.

The back nine proved particularly challenging as he registered three bogeys, although he escaped with a par on the 18th after being forced to innovate and play a shot right-handed.

Horschel dreaming of Open win

10:25 , Jack Rathborn

“Envisioning myself holding that trophy on 18, walking out to the crowd and being congratulated as Open champion.

“That’s what I’m going to do again tonight and hopefully that comes true tomorrow.

“If it doesn’t, then I’ll get back on the grind and work harder to get back in a position like this again.”

Ryan Fox is the only man to make a birdie on the Postage Stamp today. There might not be many more today either...

Mickelson and MacIntyre have a large group following them, but both men are +1 today and T59 at +7 overall.

Jordan Spieth is -2 through three, to sit T33 at +4. Fox is one better for the day, -4 through 10, but back on +5 overall.

Horschel dreaming of Open win

10:04 , Lawrence Ostlere

American Billy Horschel has gone to bed every night this week contemplating winning The Open but he is closer than ever to that becoming a reality after grinding his way to the top of the leaderboard on a brutal third day at Royal Troon.

The 37-year-old shot a 69 in the worst of the wind and rain and, despite being six under at one point and bogeying the last, his four-under total was enough for a one-stroke 54-hole lead.

He benefited from Englishman Dan Brown double-bogeying the 18th to elevate him to that position but it is something Horschel has spent the last six nights imagining.

“Something I’ve done this year, and I’ve done a better job of it this week, is sort of manifest seeing myself holding the trophy before I go to sleep every night,” said the Floridian, whose travels overseas have made him something of an Anglophile with a liking for West Ham, darts and cricket.

The Open 2024 picks

09:56 , Jack Rathborn

Xander Schauffele is Rich Beem’s pick: “He's got self-belief now.”

While David Howell agrees, but is perhaps going with heart: “I agree with Rich, but I think Rose is equipped to do it, I can't imagine Rose's career without a claret jug, so I’ll go with him.”

The tradition after an ace is to buy drinks for everyone but Kim was not aware of that.

“I’ve got to buy Korean barbecue but it’s not my country so maybe I get fish and chips for my team,” he added.

Kim’s two previous attempts playing the 238-yard penultimate hole had resulted in a double bogey and a bogey but he arrived on the tee having birdied the 16th, his first since the short Postage Stamp eighth, but at seven over for the tournament.

“Then people are yelling at me as I didn’t realise the ball went in. It was amazing. I had plenty of holes-in-one in my life, maybe over 10 times, but I think this is the most memorable hole-in-one because it’s a major and The Open and I was having a hard time on the front nine.

“I was feeling terrible about my shots (at the hole) the last couple of days. I made double Thursday and I made three-putt again yesterday: finally I got the hole-in-one, so I think I like it now.”

South Korea’s Si Woo Kim had earlier made the first hole-in-one on the 17th in 10 Open Championships at Troon.

Kim was two over par after 16 holes but walked off the 17th back to level for the day after his tee shot pitched just short of the green and rolled inexorably into the cup on the 238-yard par three.

“That finish is why it’s a little bit deflating as I’ve ground it out today and through not hitting a bad golf shot I’ve dropped three,” Brown said.

Brown bogeyed the 13th to drop back alongside Horschel and enjoyed another massive stroke of luck on the next, hooking his tee shot well left of the green but ending up with a perfect lie on a walkway.

He chipped to three feet to save par and also made a brilliant par on the daunting 15th, hitting driver off the tee and for his second shot before getting up and down from 40 yards short of the green.

After reclaiming the outright lead with a birdie on the 16th, Brown bogeyed the 17th and ran up a double on the last, where he was unfortunate to see his drive finish on the edge of a bunker.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry, who took a two-shot lead into the third round, struggled to a 77 to fall three shots off the pace in pursuit of his second Open title.

Lowry found himself three clear when Rose and Brown both bogeyed the first and again after holing from 16 feet for birdie on the fourth.

Another birdie putt from Lowry came up inches short on the 613-yard sixth and Brown took full advantage, a superb approach leaving a tap-in.

Brown’s drive on the seventh was so far off line that it almost hit Scheffler and Dean Burmester on the eighth green, but he was fortunate to end up with a clear shot and hit a superb third to three feet to set up an unorthodox birdie.

Minutes later there was a tie at the top after both he and Lowry found the Coffin bunker on the eighth, with Brown making a bogey and Lowry a double after hitting his second shot over the green.

Horschel’s fourth birdie of the day made it a three-way tie before a combination of bogeys across the 10th and 11th left the leading trio together on five under, but Brown birdied the 12th to edge into the outright lead.

Lowry, who had complained furiously about what appeared to be members of the broadcast media in the fairway on the previous hole, three-putted the 12th from off the green to fall two behind.

Horschel, who famously followed a 67 with an 85 in similar weather the last time Troon staged the Open in 2016, only put his rain jacket on between shots as he scrambled his way to an astounding 69 to finish four under par.

That gave the 37-year-old a slender lead over six players, with Brown joined on three under by compatriot Justin Rose, US PGA champion Xander Schauffele and a trio of players who had exploited ideal early conditions.

South African Thriston Lawrence, who teed off more than three hours before the final group, carded a superb 65 to set a clubhouse target which was matched by Sam Burns (65) and Russell Henley (66).

And as the weather took a significant turn for the worse, they steadily climbed the leaderboard to end the day in a tie for second, with world number one Scottie Scheffler ominously poised another stroke behind.

Brown, who birdied the 36th hole in qualifying to secure his major debut, defied miserable conditions to leave himself 18 holes away from a fairytale triumph.

The world number 272 held the outright lead until an unfortunate double bogey on the 18th, but a third round of 73 left him just a shot behind American Billy Horschel.
